Roundtables

01. Hazardous Drug Residues: Prevention, Detection, and Remediation

Microbial control during sterile compounding involves reducing ingress into controlled spaces, frequent cleaning and disinfection, and periodic monitoring for the levels of microorganisms on surfaces and in the air. This roundtable discussion will address similar strategies which can reduce the risk of unintended exposure to residues of hazardous drugs, including the use of engineering and administrative controls, decontamination of potential contamination, and wipe sampling to measure residues.

Learning Objectives

  • Distinguish the possible sources for cross-contamination of hazardous drug residues.
  • Identify the methods used to sample for HD residues, recognize the strengths and weaknesses of each method, and how the results can be interpreted.
  • Discuss the chemical agents and processes used to decontaminate HD residues.
