Micronutrient Monitoring in Home Parenteral Nutrition Patients: Challenges, Standardization, and Opportunities for Improved Safety

Activity Description : Home parenteral nutrition (HPN) patients are at risk for micronutrient deficiencies and toxicities, however, there is no standardized framework to guide clinicians through the clinically complex and operationally burdensome process of lab ordering, assessment, trending, and monitoring of laboratory data. This session will highlight the development and implementation of a comprehensive and standardized approach to the micronutrient dilemma and its impact on both clinical and operational outcomes. Through interactive discussion, participants will explore strategies for implementing similar processes within their own organizations and identify practical solutions to common barriers.

Learning Objectives

  • Identify common barriers to ordering, collecting, assessing, trending, and monitoring micronutrient deficiencies in the home setting.
  • Describe how standardized micronutrient-related processes can reduce operational burden, improve workflow efficiency, and support safer clinical decision-making for HPN patients.
  • Develop strategies to implement a standardized micronutrient process within their own organization.
