Education Track Sessions

Integration of Clinical Bioethics into Clinical Practice: Navigating the Difficult Conversations

The session aims to improve knowledge and competence of the nutrition support clinician (NSC) when providing PN in the setting of life limiting illness through the application of ethical principles, evidenced based medicine (EBM), and best practice principles. The session will also address ethical challenges by applying an interprofessional, collaborative approach to favorably impact patient experiences, quality of life, and ultimately clinical outcomes. It will describe best practices in shared decision-making as well as obtaining informed consent. Furthermore, the session will discuss when PN is indicated, assessment of benefits versus risks/burdens, and the “palliative” PN formulation. Finally, it will define the nutrition support clinicians’ (NSCs) role as an essential part of the transdisciplinary team sharing knowledge and expertise via an ethical landscape. These concepts will be reinforced through clinical case reviews throughout the presentation.
