Education Track Session

From Oral Intake to Nutrition Support: Managing Nutrition Challenges Across the Parkinson's Disease Continuum

Activity Description : Parkinson’s Disease (PD) is the second most common neurodegenerative disease, with 90,000 diagnosed each year in the U.S. In addition to motor symptoms, PD patients face many non-motor complications including gastrointestinal and swallowing issues such as constipation, gastroparesis, weight loss, malnutrition, and dysphagia. This session will provide an overview of PD and highlight strategies to address nutrition related non-motor symptoms of PD, including proactive interventions and determination of when enteral or parenteral nutrition is appropriate.

Handouts/Tools: A handout with a brief overview of PD, statistics, population, and nutrition considerations will be provided. Case study examples will be shared and discussed.
